Current trends within banking and financial services
2008 was witness to unprecedented events within the global financial services market resulting in the emergence of a dramatically changed recruitment landscape in the City of London and around the world. Lack of confidence in the global financial markets has prompted a significant deterioration in hiring volumes which has considerably reduced the number of passive jobseekers exploring new banking job opportunities within the sector. We have seen employees choosing to stay within their current roles and the balance in the war for talent has shifted with employers now well and truly in the driving seat. Supply now far outweighs demand resulting in highly competitive, rigorous and challenging job search conditions.
2009 looks set to be less dramatic but will continue to present a number of challenges. The uncertainty that prevails is making it difficult to accurately forecast how the recruitment landscape will fare in 2009. Whilst growth is not expected, it is not unrealistic to think we have seen the worst of the aggressive downsizing and highly fluctuating market within the financial services sector. Recovery will be slow but stable and whilst job volumes will remain relatively low we do expect permanent and temporary recruitment levels to stabilise.
Demand for highly skilled, experienced professionals, particularly in financial control and regulation is steady. 55% of organisations surveyed in Q4 2008 by our parent company Randstad, highlighted skill shortages in spite of the economic downturn and a third of HR professionals expect to see this shortage deteriorate over the next two years. All of which is good news for talented finance professionals looking for finance and banking jobs.
The City of London may be experiencing dramatic effects due to the credit crunch however we are confident it is uniquely placed at the heart of the global financial market and benefits from an unrivalled pool of talent.
